How does medical treatment with Telaleaf work?

1. You must first register to become a patient (click "Register" at the top of the page).

2. First appointment: All new patients will have a consultation in-person with one of our physicians based your preferred location. This is required, without exception, by the German professional code of conduct for physicians conducting telemedicine appointments. This only applies to the first appointment. All further therapy and appointments are conducted remotely by video or email/messaging.

3. Follow-up appointments: After your first appointment, patients should have an initial virtual follow-up consultation one month later to assess their treatment. After this initial follow-up, patients will have follow-ups once a quarter. In general, once a quarter is sufficient for follow-ups, but patients can always request appointments sooner than that (once a month, for instance).

4. Prescription refills: You can request a prescription refill at anytime from your treating physician by booking a 5 minute Prescription Refill Request appointment.

What will happen during my first appointment?

The first appointment takes place in-person at one of our affiliate clinic locations. This is required without exception by the German professional code for physicians conducting telemedicine. During the first appointment, you and your doctor will clarify what you expect from the treatment appointment. You will both discuss your medical history and the items on your intake form to consider medical cannabis treatment options for your condition.

Your prescription will be sent to a mail-order pharmacy that specializes in medical cannabis and they will deliver your preparation to you within 1-2 business days. Alternatively, you can request that your prescription be submitted to any other pharmacy in Germany but we cannot guarantee that these pharmacies stock the cannabis you were prescribed or that they offer fair and competitive pricing.

You will receive helpful informational materials, including information about low-cost pharmacies, about proper protocol as it relates to driving and a letter for your primary care doctor.

How does further treatment take place via video consultation?

Further therapy takes place virtually via video consultation and messaging. The video consultation takes place at least once per quarter and generally costs about 40 € for a normal consultation and 80 € for a detailed consultation. However, you can also arrange a monthly consultation if you would like closer support at the beginning of therapy. Additional costs are incurred for the issuance of a prescription. These prescription costs (including shipping) amount to about 20 €.

Important note: Once a quarter, you will receive a short questionnaire about your treatment through the Telaleaf app. This is for your doctor to track the progress of your treatment. Completing this remote monitoring questionnaire will enable you to request follow-up prescriptions through the Telaleaf portal without a video consultation with your doctor. It is important to complete this questionnaire in order to request prescriptions directly through the website without a video consult.

How do I get my medicine?

After each treatment, you will receive your prescription, which can be sent to a low-cost pharmacy specialized in cannabis medicines that will ship your medication to your home for free in 1-2 business days. You can select from the list of specialized pharmacies when you register as a patient with Telaleaf.

Alternatively, you can choose to have your prescription sent to any pharmacy of your choice in Germany. However, we cannot guarantee that these pharmacies will have your medication in stock. This is why we strongly recommend that patients use pharmacies that specialize in cannabis medicine.

Where can I find a pharmacy?

Telaleaf has aligned with a vetted group of specialized cannabis pharmacies to ensure that medical cannabis prescriptions can be filled in a fast and cost-friendly manner for our patients. We work closely with our partners to ensure that these pharmacies are consistently providing the highest level of service and the best prices. These specialized pharmacies will ship your preparation to you within 1-2 business days.

When you complete the new patient registration steps, you will receive the option to have your prescription sent to one of these recommended low-cost, mail-order pharmacies specialized in medical cannabis.

Alternatively, you can submit your prescription to any pharmacy in Germany but we cannot guarantee that these pharmacies stock the cannabis you were prescribed or that they offer fair and competitive pricing.

How do I refill my prescription?

You can request a prescription refill at any time from your doctor by submitting a Prescription Refill Consultation on the Telaleaf website/app. This is a short 5-minute video consultation with your treating doctor. The request is reviewed and approval by your treating doctor and shipped to you via registered mail.

A maximum of 3 varieties fit on one prescription. If more than 3 varieties are requested, another prescription must be requested.

The cost for refill is 20 € and includes shipping by registered mail.

Note: It is important to refill your prescription at least once a month to ensure that you maintain the status for receiving ongoing medical cannabis therapy as this can affect the validity of your driving and police checks.

How can I change my prescription preparation?

You can specify any changes you would like to make to your medication when requesting a prescription refill.

When may cannabis medicines be prescribed?

Cannabis flowers and extracts may be prescribed for any indication if their use is justified (§ 13 Narcotics Act). The Narcotics Act states, "In particular, use is not justified if the intended purpose can be achieved by other means."

So, in general, you should have tried other standard procedures, and they should not be effective or not sufficiently effective, or they should be associated with side effects. Even stricter requirements apply to the assumption of costs by the statutory health insurance funds in accordance with Section 31 (6) of the German Social Code, Book V.

Register with Telaleaf to request an appointment with one of our physicians who can review your medical history and concerns and find out if medical cannabis is right for you.

What is the cost of treatment?

Patients who do not have private medical insurance must pay for the cost of therapy themselves and will receive invoices for the therapy. Patients with private insurance can settle the cost with their private insurance company.

Treatment is must be billed according to the GOÄ (fee schedule for doctors) given that this is a private medical service.

- The cost of the first appointment (duration of about 1hr) is generally charge 120€
- Follow-up appointments range between 40€ and 80€ based on your preferred time duration
- Prescription refills are €20 (5-minute video consult)

Does statutory health insurance cover the costs of treatment with cannabis?

A prescription by means of a private prescription can be issued at any time and for any indication, irrespective of approval by the health insurance fund.

In the case of statutory health insurance companies, it is less likely to receive insurance coverage but still possible in some cases. Before treatment begins, approval must be granted by the health insurance company if the treatment is to be paid for by the health insurance company. However, the law (§ 31 para. 6 SGB V) states that this application may only be rejected by the health insurance company "in justified exceptional cases". A decision on the applications is to be made within 3-5 weeks - even if the medical service of the health insurance funds is involved. The complete wording of § 31 para. 6 SGB V can be found online

Am I allowed to drive?

The patient’s ability to drive is determined on a case-by-case basis and is ultimately decided by the treating physician. Our doctors provide important documentation and can provide legal protection with respect to driving and police checks.

According to the Bundestag: “In principle, patients are allowed to drive on the road as long as their ability to drive is not impaired due to the medication, ie they must be able to drive a vehicle safely. The same legal situation applies here as for other medications, such as opioid prescriptions.” (cf. www.bundestag.de ).

How can I travel with my medical cannabis?

You can request from your doctor "Certificate for carrying narcotics for medical treatment - Article 75 of the Schengen Implementation Agreement". This certificate makes it possible to travel in the Schengen area with your medication for a maximum of 30 days.
